Lorman, MS: After spending several years being displaced around the Advanced Technology building, the Campus Chronicle newspaper will soon have a new home. Construction beganh this summer on a new space for the Campus Chronicle newspaper. The paper will move from its current small cramped space to a larger modern facility in the Advanced Technology building. This move is through the efforts of Dr. Naplolean Moses, who donated the space, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Department chair and Mr. Terence Nimox, newspaper advisor who designed the lab.
The new facilities will include equipment donated by the Mississippi Press Association of several computers and printers. According to Mr. Nimox, the Mississippi Press Association provided a $10,000 grant to Alcorn while Mrs. Toni Terrett was still working with the department as newspaper advisor. Upon the departure of Mrs. Terrett, I was asked to complete the project." Nimox adds that he selected equipment which based on his experience would work best for a campus newspaper.
The Campus Chronicle area is scheduled to open in September of 2003,according to the contractor. There will be a open space which will have internet access points and "transforming" tables. These tables will allow the room to be converted from a classroom to a conference room, to a newspaper production lab in a matter of minutes. The area also will include a larger office for the advisor with a observation area for the newspaper lab. Nimox, who serves as the advisor remarked that, " it will be a good thing to have a larger office space and the addition of the observation section for the lab will allow students to use the lab on a continuous basis since there will always be someone in the area."
The Campus Chronicle staff are also welcoming the new addition of a newspaper lab. According to a senior layout editor, " I am so happy to see that we are getting a larger area before I graduate. We have been cramped for so long, now maybe others can come and join the newspaper staff. Other staff members added that, "We had to work many late nights to try to produce a paper, but now the staff will be able to work anytime during the day." Students which completed internshipsh over the summer commented, " we were working over the summer away from Alcorn, and now that we have returned to school , we expect to see a new place to work, we will be so happy when I see it."
The Campus Chronicle started as a production of the Communications department. It was originally published as a "photocopied" and stapled newsletter when Dr. David Crosby began the paper. It evolved into a tabloid size newspaper under the direction of Ms. Ann White. The paper started including increased advertising under the direction of Mrs. Toni Terrett and began a more stable publication schedule. The newspaper went into limited publication in the fall of 2002 while restructuring. In the Spring of 2003 under the leadership of Mr. Terence Nimox, the Campus Chronicle released its first prototype full size paper to "rave" reviews. The Campus Chronicle now plans on publishing a "weekly" web edition to supplement its printed form.
The Campus Chronicle has also changed its content to match a wider audience both outside and inside the campus community.
