As the 2008 spring concert approached, it was the talk of Alcorn State University. No one knew the headline act was to be. Rumors circulated that rapper Plies or R&B crooner Keyshia Cole would headline the annual show.
But when doors opened on April 9, it was Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy and R&B singer Trey Songz who took the stage.
"I think that this will be one of the most exciting concerts that we have ever had," said Derrick Jones, a junior agriculture/
economics major.
"This will definitely be one of the most memorable concerts because you have two of the most talented artists performing: one for the guys and one for the ladies. This will definitely be one of the most memorable concerts."There are some students who are looking for a wider variety at the spring concert.
For the past four years there have been rappers, but some students are looking for more contemporary acts.
"I wish Alcorn had more variety in who we showcase," said Ashley Rankin, a junior and biology major.
"Usually we have rap artist, which is fine, but I'd prefer to see an artist like Jill Scott or Beyonce."And while there isn't a consensus, many agree this year's lineup is better than 2007.
"Last year, the (show) didn't live up to the expectations of what I thought," said Amber Hall, a sophomore biology major.
Junior Nicole Owens said, "I think that the choices for the concert could be a little bit better. Trey Songz is hot, but Young Jeezy can not rap."
For Whitney Randolph, the concert was a new experience. "This will be my first concert on a college campus, so I'm very excited," said Whitney Randolph, a freshman elementary education major. She was one of hundreds that will be in attendance.
This year's concert was open to the public. Tickets were 20 dollars for non students. All ASU students got in free with a valid Alcorn State University gold card.
