Recent talk among students on Alcorn State University campus is not about the latest music or the latest fashions in Hollywood, but about campus security.

Aleesha Mullen, a freshman from Starkville, Mississippi majoring in physical therapy, is concerned with the health problems that can be the result of such living conditions.
"There are a lot of diseases and sicknesses that can come from living like this, I think that Alcorn can and should do a better job. I mean, seriously, I live on the sixth floor and everyday after track practice I have to walk up six flights of stairs to get to my room. Its really pathetic [situation]" says Mullen.

A significant amount of students have been complaining of the living conditions at the university.

The matron of the Cleopatra D. Thompson women's tower, Natasha Sanders, says that "the young women that reside in this vicinity need to realize that these conditions will be bettered as soon as possible. To fix one of the elevators in the tower would cost over $100,000."

One of the largest dormitories on the campus is the Cleopatra D. Thompson Women's Tower which has seven floors and can accommodate over 500 female residents. Alicia Hawkins, a senior from Austin Texas majoring in criminal justice is concerned about how these living conditions will affect future enrollment at the university. "This is the largest freshman class that I have seen in my four years here who are planning on transferring. When they get home, what do you think they are going to say about Alcorn? They are going to tell their friends NOT to come here."

The women of the Cleopatra D. Thompson women's tower have been complaining of fungus in the bathrooms, severely cracked ceiling, and two elevators that do not work.

Davida Morrow is s sophomore from Laurel, Mississippi majoring in Biology/Pre-Medicine lives on the second floor of the tower and feels that the tower needs to go under immediate construction. "When my roommate and I take showers, pieces of the ceiling fall on us. I'm not talking about little pieces of paper, or nothing. I'm talking about actual pieces of the ceiling."
