Unsure of whether the lack of motivation was internal or external, I decided to take some time off. I moved to Fort Hood, Texas to live with my husband. After a year of self examination, I determined that I needed to attain my degree elsewhere. Unexpected circumstances led me to Vicksburg, where it was suggested that I attend Alcorn State University. Due to my initial college experience, I was hesitant to attend the small HBCU but reluctantly gave it a try. As a transfer student from a university that left much to be desired, I only hoped to get a class schedule that I could manage and maintain a high GPA. Little could prepare me for what was in store.
Like any other university, registration was absolute chaos. Extremely long lines, disgruntled students and miscommunications were the norm. Students swarmed like busy bees trying to find out where they needed to go and the steps they needed to take. I stood in line for about five hours while trying to register for classes. Surprisingly, after the long wait, the actual class enrollment process went very smoothly. My academic advisor seemed eager to help me chose classes that fit my needs and she gave an air of optimism about what I would come to call "The Alcornite Experience." That day on the drive home, I began to wonder what my instructors would be like, and how I would perceive their courses. For the first time in years, I was eager to attend class and meet all the challenges faced.
After the first day of classes, I knew I would really enjoy my time here as an Alcornite. All of my professors were very enthusiastic about their respective courses, especially those in the Mass Communications department. They all seemed very positive and extremely dedicated to their roles as educators. My experience at Alcorn State University thus far has been great. It is often said that first impressions last a lifetime, and my initial impression could not have been better.
