Coming into Thursday night's game against Arkansas- Pine Bluff the braves were looking for a win to jump start their season. Under new coach Ernest Jones, the Braves had gotten of to a rough start with a 0-3 record. Thanks to a physical defensive effort and timely offense Alcorn was able to pick up their first win of the season.
Alcorn's defensive game plan was to stack the line of scrimmage and make Pine Bluff beat them throwing the football. said Jones. That exactly what they did, holding UAPB dynamic duo of Martell Mallett and Mickey Dean to 79 yards rushing on 20 carries combined, while the Gold lion quarterbacks Jonathan Moore and Gvona Turner combined for 127 yards for the entire game.
"It was an outstanding defensive effort," said Jones. "No matter what our offense did, our defense was not going to let (Pine Bluff) into the end zone. I'm very proud of our defense.
The offense lead by quarterback Tim Buckley did just enough to win the game. While struggling early, the offense founded its rhythm late in the second quarter when Buckley found senior wide receiver Emmanuel Freneau on a perfectly thrown ball for a touchdown putting the braves up 7-3 going into halftime.
The momentum captured after scoring that first half touchdown seemed to carry over into the second half. UAPB wasn't able to put together a serious offensive threat in the second half thanks to the Brave's fierce defense.
Alcorn was able to put the game away with two Taylor Richardson field goals that game the braves a 13 - 3 win at home . Coach Jones spoke about not only getting his first win at Alcorn as head coach, but the manner in which it was done.
I wouldn't have it any other way," said Jones. "Our fans deserve. To get it on ESPNU on our campus in front of our fans is awesome. I'm very excited to finally get my first win but I'm more excited for the guys who have worked so hard," said Jones.
