The cold night air was a perfect fit for the members of the Delta Kappa chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and their "Alpha Ball" that was held at 8:06 pm on the night of the organization's 102nd Birthday (Dec. 4, 2008). Their Founders' Day program was held at 1:00 pm on the second floor of the Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr. Dining Hall and that prompted many of those who attended to attend the ball as well.
The ball itself was every bit as spectacular. Students that were in attendance were dressed to the nines and the refreshments where delicious as well. At first the party was kind of dull, but once the Alphas hit the dance floor and begin strolling, everybody got out of there seats and let loose.
"We had a good turn out. It got crunk after everyone ate," said Alpha Phi Alpha member Trey Anthony.
Guys were throwing their inhibitions into the wind and asking girls to dance, practice that is rarely ever seen anymore on the this campus. There was even slow
dancing!
"I think it was a success," explained Alpha member Derrick Squaire. "I was proud with the showing. People came, ate, danced, and had a good time."
You could tell there was nothing but love in the atmosphere, because unlike many functions at that take place at Alcorn, there was not violence or hostility. "The turn out was better that we expected," member GeColby Youngblood explained. "We didn't expect that many people to show up due to it being so close to finals." Even though the Alphas where the main focus of the evening that didn't stop the non-Greeks at the ball from having a good time.
"I had a great time," said Esaw Owens, a sophomore Business Administration major from Alexandria, LA. "It was more than what I expected."
Many Alcornites look forward to seeing more from the Alphas as well as the rest of the Greek letter organizations as the school goes on.
