Alcorn's department of Mass Communications held its fourth annual Media Day on Thursday, April 2 in the Agricultural Extension Building.
Alcorn's communications students, alumni, faculty, and students of Natchez, Port Gibson, and Vicksburg high schools attended the Media Day program.
The Media Day program featured a number of rap sessions facilitated by Mrs. Toni Terrett, Associate Professor and Advisor to the Campus Chronicle. The sessions covered everything from the attitude needed to succeed in today's media professions to the uncertainty of the newspaper industry.
The rap sessions were moderated by select communications students of Alcorn and paneled by a number of professionals, including Kathy Times, an investigative reporter and anchor for Fox 40 News in Jackson, Miss., and Alcorn alumni Tim Crisler, Senior Corporate Communications Specialist at Entergy.
Jason Klein, Director of Radio and Television at the Mississippi Public Broadcasting Association, Don Hudson, Managing Editor of the Clarion-Ledger, Earnest Hart, Assistant Managing Editor of the Clarion-Ledger, and Dr. Charles Sheppard, Publisher and Editor of the Fayette Chronicle, also paneled the sessions.
In addition to the professionals on the panel, Alcorn alumni Latoya Hentz, Weekend Anchor and Reporter of WXVT-15 in Greenville, Miss., and Brickney Frierson, graduate student of Syracuse University also paneled a number of rap sessions.
The first rap session, entitled "An Attitude for Success," was moderated by Junior Print Journalism Major Brandi Pikes. The panelists, Tim Crisler, Jason Klein, and Brickney Frierson, gave students insight on how to approach a media career. "The attitude you need to have," says Frierson, "is no attitude at all." Frierson emphasized the importance of being humble and willing to learn. Students also need to be flexible. There is "no such thing as regular hours," according to Klein. "The sky's the limit," says Crisler, "no job is too big or too small for you to do."
