Alcorn State University America
Reads Mississippi (ARM) program reaches
out, lifts up, and touches the lives of many
adults and children. This program will affect
this generation and also the generations to
follow. America Reads Mississippi is a catalyst
that promotes learning and service. It
is fulfilling the mission statement: America
Reads Mississippi is dedicated to improving
the reading skills of students, encouraging
public awareness, and support of literacy,
and helping increase the number of certified
teachers in Mississippi.
Even First Lady Michelle Obama and
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made time
to speak at 2009 National Points of Light
Conference to encourage people to become
involved in national service and volunteering
in order to improve our communities/life. The
ASU Region (Department of Education and
Psychology) has much to be proud of due to
the ARM members. . They are 104 strong in
7 counties (Amite, Claiborne, Franklin, Jefferson,
Lawrence, Adams, and Vicksburg)
infiltrating 20 schools in the region. These
members are required to tutor a minimum of
10 students a day-consequently; the past
progress report showed that 95% of the students
tutored improved one and two grade
levels in their reading area. They are committed
to serve a minimum of 4 hours a week
inclusive of extended school day and summer
programs-each member achieving at least
1700 hours of service. The members are role
models for the Junior Citizen Corps which are
actively involved in community service projects
and obtain trained certified professionals
to train students in the area of Fire Safety,
Seat Belt, Bike Safety, and Severe Weather.
This wonderful program not only
benefits the students but also benefits the tutors
by providing educational awards, assistance
with child care cost, health insurance,
professional training, and a living allowance
for stipend members. Through assistance
