Alcorn State University will begin a
year-long, campus-wide effort to study its
athletics program as part of the NCAA Division
I athletics certification program. The
study will cover such areas as academic integrity,
governance and commitment to rules
compliance, and commitment to gender and
diversity and student-athlete well-being.
The purpose of the NCAA's athletics
certification program is to help ensure integrity
in the athletics operations of its member
institutions. The study will open up athletics
to the rest of the university/college community
in a broad-based manner and invite input
from the faculty, students, staff members,
alumni and the general public. As a result,
the university will benefit by increasing campus-
wide awareness and knowledge of the
athletics program, confirming its strengths
while developing plans to improve areas of
concern.
The Steering Committee for NCAA
Recertification is responsible for the study
and includes Dr. George E. Ross, president
of Alcorn State University, Dr. Peter R. Malik,
faculty members, athletics department
personnel, students, a staff member and an
alumnus. To begin the process, a member of
the NCAA membership services staff conducted
a one-day orientation videoconference
with the Steering Committee and its
subcommittees on September 23.
When the university has concluded
its study next spring, an external team of
reviewers will conduct a three-day evaluation
visit on campus. Those reviewers will
be peers from other colleges, universities or
conference offices. After the visit, the peerreview
team will report to the NCAA Division
I Committee on Athletics Certification.
The Committee on Athletics Certification
will then determine the institution's certification
status and announce the decision publicly.
