On Tuesday morning, Alcorn State University
hosted a groundbreaking ceremony
for its new $47 million housing development
project, as an official announcement
of its coming.
An abundant crowd gathered in the James
L. Bolden Student Union to witness this innovative
project. A tentative exploratory of
the new housing complex was placed on
display in the T.V. Room on the upper level
of the union.
Witnesses for the event included faculty
and staff, students, administrators,
IHL Board members and more. They all
were educated about the new development
through voice and video.
"The new student housing complex
changes the face of the university in terms
of housing for the students, which is intended
to increase capacity, recruit and retain
students," says Dr. Samuel White, Interim
Dean of Arts and Sciences, he adds,
"the facility will offer amenities which will
include convenience type stores and cultural
facilities to enhance overall living and
learning experiences."
With all delight in regard to the new
housing complex, current living conditions
may have been detrimental to new-students'
experiences. Present housing may have
caused some students to even resent their
presence here. "Some students are choosing
to stay off campus due to harsh living conditions
on campus," stated Keke Hopkins, a
junior at the University.

Kristie Banks, a Student Ambassador
member, stated "it's a long awaited progress
and improvement, and it should open more
doors education wise, hopefully it will attract
more students through the look of this
particular housing."
Student program guides for the ceremony
commented that incoming students often inquire
about where and how we live. Those
students will enjoy the luxury of on-campus
housing where past students didn't and will
not experience. However, this new complex
should make students more comfortable at
the University.
The facility is equipped with carpet and
tile (bathroom) flooring, and a small, convenient
relaxing area with a plasma television.
Also, a kitchen area with sink, refrigerator
and microwave, but study desks and space
are somewhat smaller, but all quarters are
temperature controlled and personal rooms
have actual home-like closets.
The University's President, Dr. George
Ross, offered that "the students must take
care of our things and be responsible and
accountable adults. I will have a no tolerance
policy toward the defacing of property
and vandalism; that includes old facilities
as well." He added, "that type of behavior
doesn't work in the real world, you go to jail
if you do so."
The project is presumed to be complete
and fit for living by no later than in the Fall
of 2010.
