Homecoming Victory Puts Braves in SWAC East Lead

Last week against Mississippi Valley
State the Braves' defense piled up sacks, so
how could they follow that up on homecoming?
By forcing six turnovers and allowing
only 198 total yards and 16 points against Alabama
A&M. Alcorn has won two in a row
at home and now lead the Eastern division
of the SWAC. Texas Southern's two point
victory over Jackson State means that the
Braves control their own destiny to get to the
SWAC Championship.
Alcorn's offense struck quickly in the
first quarter. QB Tim Buckley threw a 44
yard touchdown pass to Terrance Lewis to
give Alcorn a 7-0 lead. The Braves would
strike again early in the second quarter with a
seven yard touchdown pass to stretch the lead
to 14-0. However, Alabama A&M would
partially block a Braves punt a couple of
drives later, and score on a nine yard touchdown
pass from Deaunte Mason to Anthony
Mitchell. They would go to the half with the
Braves leading 14-7.
The Braves' offense sputtered for a
while after halftime, but a stubborn defense
would make up for that. A very odd nine yard punt would give the Bulldogs the ball at Alcorn's 21 yard line.
Despite the terrific field position, the Braves' defense would
hold the Bulldogs offense to a field goal preserving the lead at
14-10. The sleeping beast in the Braves' offense would awake
on the next drive. The Braves took three plays to march down
the field and score on an Arnold Walker run to make it 21-10.
The ensuing kickoff would be returned 48 yards by A&M's
Thomas Harris. The Bulldogs would soon score on a quarterback
draw by Mason, but a failed two point attempt left them
trailing by five points.
The Braves would waste no time putting the Bulldogs
away for good in the fourth quarter. While trying to run out
the clock Arnold Walker busted through the line of scrimmage
to sprint 62 yards for a score. The defense would later add
insult to injury and return a fumble for a touchdown. The
Braves will play Alabama State next, a team that has a 0-3
record against SWAC opponents.
